Wills - Who Needs One?

Everybody does, the question is can you afford not to have one, can you trust the government of the day making decisions on a lifetime of your hard graft and providing for your children's financial and emotional needs in the future when you're not able to?

Why Make A Will?

There is a misunderstanding that your assets will automatically pass to your family upon your death this is not necessarily the case (click to view what happens in testate)*

If you don't make a will your assets will go according to the intestacy rules, in other words the state will take control of your assets and disturbed them according to specific rules which may not benefit your descendants as you may have intended, for example the intestacy rules do not include common law husband and wife or partners!

What a lot of people don't appreciate is that the rules of intestacy extend to your children and in particular what happens to them following your death.

If you're motivation for making a will is not influenced by ensuring efficient distribution of your assets then the fact that the government will decide what happens to your children should be a reason.

So if you want to ensure your assets go to people of your choosing as tax efficiently as possible and ensure your children's future then you should write a will.

Where Can You Get A Will?

1) Solicitor - You can instruct your family solicitor who will usually use a pre-designed pack and just fill in some basic details and charge you for the privilege.

2) Online or Shop - You can go online or to a high street bookshop and buy a do it yourself will which is a fraction of the cost of your solicitor but without any come back should you fill it out wrongly.

You can not afford to get this wrong! instead of providing for your descendants future which should be your intention, you could be giving them the biggest headache they have ever had, at a time when they will be mourning their loss.

So if you want to ensure your assets go to people of your choosing as tax efficiently as possible and ensure your children's future then you should write a will.

3) A Professional - You can take a few easy steps and get a professionally written will , written by specialists who do nothing else but write wills, unlike your solicitor "just wills" only write wills and nothing else so it stands to reason that they have developed an expertise through their experiences over many years looking at wills all day long.
